“Featuring the Lightz and Soundz of….”

A 30-Year Survey of DJ Culture from East L.A

June 7– August 9, 2008

G727 is pleased to present “Featuring the Lightz and Soundz of….”, an interactive participatory exhibition celebrating the first 30 years of DJ culture focusing on the Chicano/a experience in Los Angeles.

This exhibition will develop over the course of nine weeks and invites the public to contribute their party flyers, images, anecdotes, and spinning skills to an ongoing series of events and remembrances, while developing a living archive that can serve as the basis for historical research of the genre’s contribution to the Southern California cultural landscape.

Working in collaboration with groups such as Power Tools (a weekly DJ mixshow program on Los Angeles’ Power 106 FM), which has chronicled the nuances of the DJ scene and continue to keep it alive in underground settings, “Featuring the Lightz and Soundz of….” will function as a staging ground for the search of the intimate and personal experiences that have contributed to the formation of distinct alternative dance movements, honoring the complexities of its chronology, geography, and surrounding social context.

G727 welcomes testimonies, photos, flyers and mixes (cassette, CD or MP3) to help build the narrative about the variety of spaces and happenings that make up the first 30 years of East L.A. DJ culture. This exhibition provides a collaborative contextual framework for participants, past and present, to become active producers in the documentary process of their own cultural histories.

ELDJPM panels

These discussions revolve around the concept of exploring and archiving DJ culture from ELA. The panels are designed to capture testimonies from leaders of the DJ movement from the present, past and future so their history can be included in future discussions of the west coast and global dance scene and Chicano cultural production.

Artist as DJ
This first panel we will discuss the different types of backyard parties, DJs, party crews and promoters that were located in Northeast Los Angeles between 80’s and the 90’s. An intimate conversation with Frank Del Rio, Richard Vission and other DJs TBC who helped shape the art of mixing and programming. Via their DJ booths, radio shows and productions these DJs refined the art of DJing.

An intimate conversation with expanded the breadth of musical genres and styles by incorporating Latin alternative, dance classics and international pop and rock into their repertoires. Each DJ has helped fuel the massive Latin Alternative scene from their radio shows and clubs, and made Los Angeles the center of international music in Spanish.

After attending one of our panels Steve Beltran, a major figure from the East Los Angeles DJ scene, proposed this panel of some of his closest DJ confidants and colleagues. The DJs on this panel have been spinning since the early 1980's from some of the most influential DJ booths in the area. They have had their hands in music production, promotion, sales and publication throughout their careers. They have seen the scene go through it various changes and worked within it always. The gathering of these DJs would not have been possible if not for the work of Steve Beltran, this will truly be an intimate conversation among DJs who have known each other throughout the years.

This discussion will feature three Southern California artists who will explore concepts of performance art, turntablism and music theory. The panelist will offer a dynamic dialogue intermixed with sound and sampled tracks in front of a house located in the historic community of Boyle Heights. The audience will be encouraged to bring a blanket or a lawn chair for this event!
